In rural areas like the Glades region, education serves as critical infrastructure. Here, our public schools help strengthen long-term economic health by preparing the future workforce. They’re also a key way to attract families, foster community engagement and maintain long-term community stability. When these schools have the resources they need, students are better positioned to succeed, and communities are better equipped to grow.

For decades, U.S. Sugar has continued to invest in local education efforts, reflecting our commitment to the Glades region, where many of our team members live and raise their families. One way we contribute to local classrooms is through our corporate education partnership with the Palm Beach County Education Foundation and its Red Apple Supplies, a free teacher resource store for Palm Beach County Schools. By working together with community partners and educators, we help ensure teachers have the tools they need to create successful learning environments.

Understanding the Importance of Classroom Supplies

School supplies directly impact the quality of learning, and they also play a major role in student readiness. Too often, teachers are left to fill funding outages themselves by personally purchasing classroom resources.

Programs like Red Apple Supplies provide a way for businesses, organizations and individuals to donate classroom materials that teachers can access throughout the year. Since launching in 2016, Red Apple Supplies has distributed more than $8 million in supplies to Title I schools across Palm Beach County.

Supporting Local Students

Through a recent Red Apple Supplies Pop-Up Shop event, teachers were able to select the classroom materials they needed most—ensuring resources were both practical and immediately impactful. The event resulted in:

  • 85 teacher orders fulfilled
  • 11 schools supported
  • $19,465 in supplies distributed

In addition to these targeted efforts, broader initiatives, such as our back-to-school drive have helped distribute nearly 5,000 backpacks filled with classroom supplies to students across the region.

Brannan Thomas, U.S. Sugar’s Director of Community Relations, says, “U.S. Sugar is committed to supporting student success in the classroom, and that starts by providing the tools students need to have an outstanding school year. On behalf of our company’s 3,000 employees, we wish the teachers, faculty members, parents and students a safe and successful school year.”

Why Business and School Partnerships Work Wonders

Corporate education partnerships create meaningful impact. Educators understand the needs of their students and classrooms, while businesses can contribute resources, logistics and additional support. These partnerships also help strengthen community relationships and encourage broader participation from other organizations, creating a multiplier effect across the region.

Programs like Red Apple Supplies are especially effective because they allow teachers to select the supplies their classrooms need most.

As educator Moises Cortes from Glades Central High School shared: “My students and I are very grateful to U.S. Sugar for their donation to the Red Apple Pop-Up Shop. Your contribution is very much appreciated, and we are proud that a local company helped supply their local schools.”

Why Education Investment Strengthens Local Communities

When classrooms have the resources they need, students are on their way to success—both academically and professionally. Strong schools also attract families and help maintain vibrant communities.

We operate in Palm Beach County, where many employees live and where their children attend local schools. Through programs like Red Apple Supplies, we’re investing in students today while strengthening the workforce of tomorrow.
