Clewiston, FL — August 20, 2008 — U.S. Sugar Corporation announced that the Clewiston Refinery is breaking several key production records. The sugar refining and packaging facility is projected to set new production records by the end of August for total refined production (12.85 million cwt), packaged production (4.62 million cwt), and liquid sugar production (630,000 cwt). Previous records: total refined production (11.34 cwt, set in 05-06), packaged production (4.13 million cwt., set in 03-04) and liquid sugar production (514,341 cwt, set in 06-07). “The Refinery is running exceptionally well, breaking records at every turn” said Robert Coker, senior vice president, public affairs. Three years ago, the Refinery’s capacity was expanded to enable the facility to refine all of the company's raw sugar production. Current capacity is 45,000 cwt. or 2250 tons per day. The expansion along with the enhanced high quality sugar produced by the modernization and consolidation of the Clewiston Mill and a stable team of refinery employees are credited with the record production. “The Refinery’s record pace, coupled with a smaller local crop this past season, allowed U.S. Sugar to turn NAFTA’s open border between the United States and Mexico into an opportunity to refine Mexican sugar in Clewiston,’ Coker said. By the end of the week, the Company will have moved 30,000 tons of raw sugar from barges entering the Port of Tampa to Clewiston. If the record pace continues, the Refinery may surpass 13 million cwt. in annual refined sugar production for the first time. U.S. Sugar’s state-of-the-art sugar factory in Clewiston is the result of a project, termed “Breakthrough” for its dramatic consolidation and transformation of the Company’s two older raw sugar milling operations. The three-year construction project incorporated the best sugar technology from around the world. According to Coker, the summer repair season for the raw sugar factory is going well, with an anticipated start to the next crop in early October. ###
