An executive of Clewiston-based United States Sugar Corp. said that Brazil's call for greater access to U.S. sugar markets would "put thousands of Americans out of work." Speaking at the World Trade Organization conference in Cancun, Mexico, Robert Coker, senior vice president at U.S. Sugar, said that while Brazil is demanding free trade from the United States, it simultaneously provides major subsidies to its own sugar cane industry and competes unfairly with U.S. producers. Brazil has accused the United States of using quotas and high tariffs to block imports of Brazilian sugar.
