Southern Gardens Citrus sponsored a softball team led by head coach Juan Sanchez, left, and assistant coach Jose Aragus.

Employees of U.S. Sugar and Southern Gardens Citrus hit a home run this spring with their involvement in the Clewiston Youth Baseball and Softball League.

Southern Gardens Citrus, a subsidiary of U.S. Sugar, was the proud sponsor of a softball team for girls ages 13 to 15. U.S. Sugar employees Juan Sanchez and Jose Aragus served as head coach and assistant coach.

“Working with this team was a fun, rewarding experience,’’ Sanchez said. “Not only did the girls learn about the game of softball, they also learned important life lessons about teamwork, responsibility and good sportsmanship.’’

Also helping with the team were Aragus’ wife, Julissa, who was the “Team Mom.’’ U.S. Sugar employee Alberto Hernandez, whose daughter Olivia played on the team, was the “Team Dad.’’

The girls were among 550 children ages 4 to 15 who played for the Clewiston Youth Baseball and Softball League, which is part of the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken League.

Southern Gardens Citrus is a strong supporter of the league and other community activities. SGC employee Carl “BJ” Barnes Jr. serves as the league’s vice president.
