OH BLACKWATER

USSC Today is the United States Sugar Corporation's Newsletter.

Newspaper coverage of the "Blackwater" phenomenon keeps on rolling - despite the fact that the discolored water is already dissipating and is no danger to marine life or the ecology of the area.  Repeated attempts to link this coastal event to runoff from the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) have been scientifically disputed.  Scientists from the Florida Marine Research Instititute, Mote Marine Laboratory, and the University of South Florida College of Marine Sciences analyzed scientific data collected from the blackwater event and stated that the event was marine in nature, probably related to routine winter algae blooms, and dismissed freshwater runoff from the EAA or any other source as a cause.  Dr. Ron Jones, Florida International University said, "I have conducted water quality monitoring and research in that area for 11 years.  There is certainly no evidence that any nitrogen from the EAA or the sugar farms has affected Florida Bar, Shark River Whitewater Bay or any other costal area."

Unfortunately, some reporters are not interested in the facts.
