FLORIDA TREND'S TOP 200 PRIVATE COMPANIES

Florida's Top 200 Private Companies list for 2002 finds Publix Super Markets at the head of the class. The Lakeland-based grocer pulled in revenues of $15.3 billion in 2001, almost twice as much as No. 2 JM Family Enterprises. Total revenues for the Top 200 Private Companies list was $86.8 billion, nearly $6 billion more than last year's list.

An overview of the list shows that many of Florida's leading private companies are still rooted in the state's traditional core industries of agriculture (No. 28 United States Sugar Corp., No. 129 Pacific Tomato Growers) and tourism (No. 95 Meyer Jabara Hotels, No. 128 Rosen Hotels & Resorts). A more diversified economic base that comes with population growth has borne fruit: industries from pharmaceuticals to technology infrastructure are represented on this year's list.
