Southern Gardens Citrus Processing is conducting a test run to prepare for the upcoming season scheduled for the first week in November.  The citrus processing plant is projected to process over 18 million boxes of fruit again this year, with about five million boxes of fruit coming from our own Southern Gardens Groves.  In the groves, canker prevention remains a priority.  Fortunately, there have been no further canker finds and grove staff is making plans for an August replanting of over 50,000 citrus trees to replace those that were destroyed nearly two years ago.  Southern Garden's citrus agronomist Tim Gast has become something of a celebrity, with a column on citrus canker running in newspapers across the state.  Experiencing canker firsthand in China and Brazil, Gast rebuts claims that the industry can live with canker to allow urban residents to keep exposed trees.  Calling canker the "Cancer of Citrus," Gast says it must be eradicated.
